The Cat's Paw starts where The Cat Came Back left off. Christy has solved the mystery behind her husband Frank's disappearance and death. She and Noelle have settled into her new in her Burnaby townhouse and Noelle is happy at her new school. Quinn Armstrong has become more than just a reporter looking for a story. Life is looking up and Christy can see a future outside of the Jamieson world.
Disaster looms, of course. It arrives in the form of Ellen Jamieson, Frank's aunt who always disapproved of her wealthy nephew's marriage to Christy and was never shy of voicing her criticisms. Ellen rings Christy's doorbell at 6:30 in the morning and demands sanctuary. Her downtown condo has been broken into while she slept and she is fearful the intruder might return. What can Christy do? She opens the door and invites Ellen in.
So begins a mystery that finds Ellen suspected of murder and leads Christy and Quinn to the halls of academia where they discover that the victim is not the studious grad student she pretended to be. When a second murder occurs, tensions rise and Ellen is taken in for questioning. Christy and Quinn must rush to prove her innocence before she is arrested for a murder staged by a very clever killer.
The Cat's Paw can be read as a standalone mystery or as the second book in the series.
