Elderly Juan Gay lies dying in a room at the Palace, an imposing, now dilapidated, boarding house in the California desert. He is cared for by a young man whom Juan had met a decade earlier in a psychiatric institution.
As the end approaches, they tell each other stories, resurrecting lost loves, mothers and fathers, their paths inevitably intertwined in a larger story of sexuality, pathology and oppression. Through their conversations, another story emerges, that of the radical queer activist Jean Gay (born Helen Reitman), whose groundbreaking research in the 1920s and 1930s was appropriated, without her name, by the members of the committee she served on and published in a distorted form in 1941.
Blending fact and fiction and drawing on oral narratives and historical archives, film scripts, testimonies and images, Erasures, the second novel by Justin Torres, which won the US National Book Award in 2023, is a meditation, dreamy and persistent, on memory and its erasure, on the ways in which stories constitute History.
