During the 1990s and 2000s, Algeria was shaken by a bloody civil war. After its end, the government banned and criminalized any mention of it, citing the "Reconciliation" law.
The young Fajr, whose name means Dawn, must remember her country's war of independence from France even though she did not experience it herself. At the same time, however, although she survived the dark decade, she is obliged, by law, to forget the suffering of the civil war. Her body, a notebook full of secrets, captures the tragedy of fratricide: her neck is marked by a deep knife scar, like a horrible smile, and her vocal cords are damaged.
Avgi, mute for years, has created her own inner language from the material of dreams and awaits the day she will find her voice again. She can only tell her shocking story to the child she carries in her womb and who she assumes is a girl. But how can she give life when it has almost been taken from her? Does she have the right to give birth to this baby and raise it in a world hostile to women, or is it better to terminate the pregnancy and return her unborn child to Paradise?
