Eight linked stories and a novella inspired by true events. THE PRINCELING AND OTHER STORIES explores the quandaries facing ethnic Chinese in modern Asia and North America. A corrupt Beijing businessman fleeing to Vancouver. A new immigrant drawn into a Canadian pyramid scheme, A mother and daughter navigating the complexities of international adoption. A Chinese American fighting for Taiwan after China invades the island. A condemned man's last days in a Beijing jail. A Vancouver woman's recovery from an Anti-Asian attack. And an elderly Beijinger's final days. In the novella, "The Princeling," twenty-four-year-old Max Chang returns to Beijing to tell his wealthy family that he is marrying a pregnant Caucasian American. His racist family uses all the resources at their disposal to stop him. To what extremes will the family go? They are crazy rich Asians but there is no happy ending. These linked stories showcase the diversity of outlooks and prospects among today's Chinese and strive to illuminate commonalities and differences as these characters navigate love, identity, parenthood, aging, and racism in the pursuit of acceptance in its myriad forms.
