Im 18. Jahrhundert geriet das organisch dominierte Bauen in eine Ressourcenkrise und stand damit im Spannungsfeld des obrigkeitlichen Landesausbaus. Vor diesem Hintergrund entwickelte sich die Landbaukunst als Teil der Ökonomischen Aufklärung – eine auf ressourcenbewusstes und ökonomisch nachhaltiges Bauen zielende Praxis. Ihre Protagonisten untersuchten natürliche Grundlagen, Konstruktionen und Gestaltungsweisen und erweiterten den Blick auf die Baukosten um die Instandhaltung. Am Beispiel der Kurmainzer Territorien um 1800 analysiert die Studie den Zusammenhang von Ort und Ökonomie und fragt nach der Tragfähigkeit eines frühmodernen Funktionalismus.
In the eighteenth century, construction based predominantly on organic materials entered a phase of resource scarcity and thus stood in tension with the state-driven expansion of territorial development. Against this backdrop, Landbaukunst emerged as part of the Economic Enlightenment—a practice aimed at resource-conscious and economically sustainable building. Its proponents examined the natural foundations of construction as well as the resulting structural and design principles, while also broadening the understanding of building costs to include maintenance. Using the Electoral Mainz territories around 1800 as a case study, this study analyzes the relationship between place and economy and asks about the viability of an early modern functionalism.
