Being back in Elfhame feels like coming home to a place where absolutely nobody can be trusted, everyone has an agenda, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. A Conspiracy of Charming Monsters is such a lovely addition to Holly Black’s faerie world. Much like Threshing Day by Rebecca Yarros, this collection gives us little glimpses into stories unfolding around the main events, letting us revisit characters and moments that make the world feel so much bigger than the original books alone. And the ARTWORK. Oh my god. Frostbite Studios has done such a beautiful job illustrating these stories. Every scene feels like another little piece of Elfhame brought to life, and I absolutely adore Solenne’s work. The illustrations alone make this collection worth having on your shelf. My favourite story was the one about Jude being held beneath the sea by Nicasia’s mother. Getting to explore that part of Jude’s story was fascinating, and I loved being taken back into the darker corners of this world. But can we PLEASE talk about Cardan’s POV?! I loved getting those glimpses into his perspective. One of the things that makes the original trilogy so delicious is that we don’t get to know everything Cardan feels for Jude while we’re following her. We have to piece things together, read between the lines, and watch his actions betray what his words won’t. Giving us his perspective is wonderful precisely because it offers something we couldn’t have had in the original books without revealing far too much too soon. And naturally, it left me wanting MORE. Give me another hundred pages of Cardan’s thoughts, please. I am begging. I also discovered that Holly Black wrote the Modern Faerie Tales trilogy, featuring Roiben and Kaye, long before the Elfhame books. Somehow, I had no idea these books existed, so discovering them was a lovely little bonus! My one complaint is the gold foil on the hardcover. It’s beautiful, but the lettering on the back of my copy is already wearing away, which is disappointing for such a gorgeous collector’s edition. Still, this was such a fun, atmospheric return to a world I love. If you’ve read and enjoyed the Elfhame books, I absolutely recommend picking this up. It’s a wonderful way to revisit the characters, discover little corners of their stories, and spend a little more time in Holly Black’s delightfully dangerous faerie world. I will never be done with Jude and Cardan. And apparently, Holly Black knows it.
