Melmoth der Wanderer erzählt ineinander verschachtelte Geschichten, die durch Melmoth zusammengehalten werden. Melmoth scheint nicht zu altern. Bei jeder Gelegenheit versucht er arme Seelen in Not vom Weg abzubringen.
Der Buchaufbau widerspricht der Struktur eines klassischen Romans. Geschichten werden in andere Erzählstränge eingeschoben und das Werk fühlt sich unorganisiert an. Dennoch funktioniert das Gesamtwerk, denn Melmoth erscheint zu Beginn nur wie ein vager Schatten und tritt immer stärker in den Vordergrund.
Wer sich für Schauerliteratur interessiert und Durchhaltevermögen besitzt, könnte Melmoth der Warder mögen.
