As I warn that it is tragic for someone to devote their life to watching dogs run through the woods. Seeing those dogs, the author surely recalls the ordeal his own mother had to go through. Upon returning to his hometown, he had to show his family that the son he was offering was a victim of a particular syndrome. That child was a deformed being.
