What We Can Know

Ian McEwan stellt in diesem Buch durch den Literaturwissenschaftler Tom Metcalfe eine dystopische Zukunft am Rande der sozialen und kulturellen Gesellschaft dar, die durch die Untersuchungen der 2010er und 2020er anhand eines fiktiven, verlorenen Gedichts aus 2015 implizit belehrend wirkt. Neben Krieg, Umweltzerstörung und der zunehmend unbeachteten Bedeutung von Literatur- und Geschichtswissenschaft wird auch auf die potentiellen Risiken der digitalen Medien hingewiesen. Der zweite Teil des Buches stellt die Erkenntnisse des ersten Teils sinnvoll auf den Kopf und wirft schon heute die Frage auf, was wir wissen können (-> "What We Can Know") Absolute Leseempfehlung!

A grippigen Page Turner? A Book Full of wisdom? Far from that! Dull, boring and banal. Intellectual men and women turning around one another. A poem of the century, whatever this is supposed to be and a future not so grim as predicted, if you still have time and leisure to study ancient (our century) literature. A second star is only conceded for the blink into a different world in the future. But even that does not reflect the horror of the outcome of climate change and following wars. So what do we care about ancient literature, the students say in one scene and leave one after the other the auditorium. I do the same for this story, a missed opportunity, unfortunately. Turning back to Margaret Atwood. She has more punch and wit than MacEwan will ever have….
