Modern mercenaries shaped Africa's conflicts as France's clandestine influence extended across Congo, Biafra, Angola, Chad, Rhodesia, and Libya.
From the Congo Crisis of 1960 to Bob Denard's final return to the Comoros in 1995, French mercenaries became some of the most controversial and recognisable figures in post-colonial African warfare. Many were veterans of Indochina, Algeria, the Foreign Legion and France's elite airborne forces, men whose military experience found a new outlet amid decolonisation, civil war and the global rivalries of the Cold War.
In Katanga, French soldiers of fortune such as Roger Faulques and Bob Denard helped forge the modern image of the mercenary: mobile, heavily armed, politically deniable and capable of exerting an influence far beyond his numbers. From there, French mercenaries appeared across the continent. They fought during the Congo rebellions, served the Biafran cause in Nigeria, operated alongside anti-communist forces in Angola and Rhodesia, supported Hissène Habré in Chad, and took part in a succession of covert interventions and attempted coups from Benin to the Indian Ocean.
Their record was one of striking contrasts. Tactical skill and extraordinary personal courage existed alongside improvisation, indiscipline and sometimes spectacular failure. Nor were these men simply independent adventurers. At crucial moments their activities intersected with the interests of French intelligence, the Élysée's African networks and friendly African governments, allowing Paris and its allies to exert influence while maintaining a degree of official distance.
No figure embodied this ambiguous world more completely than Bob Denard. Beginning as a relatively obscure mercenary in Katanga, he became a military organiser, political operator and ultimately the dominant figure in the Comoros, where his Presidential Guard developed into an armed force at the heart of the state. His final intervention there in 1995 marked the closing chapter of an era, as the traditional soldier of fortune gave way to the increasingly professionalised private military company.
Drawing on memoirs and testimony, official documents, academic research and an extensive range of French-language sources, French Mercenaries in Africa 1960-1995 traces the men, operations and clandestine networks behind more than three decades of African conflict. Lavishly illustrated with photographs, maps and specially commissioned colour artwork depicting uniforms, equipment and aircraft, it provides a detailed account of the battles and personalities while also examining the larger relationship between mercenary warfare, French influence and the turbulent politics of post-colonial Africa.
