The family spent Saturday skiing and shopping. On Sunday, Pearl Harbor was attacked. By Monday, the country was at war, and everything changed for the Macdonald family. He becomes a messenger for the Manhattan Project in Boston and, at 15, obtains a special driver's license to deliver groceries and help care for his mother and grandmother. Mac uses his engineering skills to help bring soldiers home. Sonny focuses on surviving battles in Italy's Apennine mountains. Ig gives up his carefree teenage years for work and school. Bertha works hard to keep the family together, hoping all the secrecy is worth the sacrifices. By the end of the war, the family faces unexpected losses.
