The worship of the new, the renewal of the self, innovation, the acceleration of economic processes, and, more generally, of everyday life in late modernity are inseparably linked with fashion. Fashion exists through the "short-lived new" and is embedded in the most characteristic functions of economic capital. Yet fashion also does other things: it introduces ways of relating to oneself, to others, to time, and to objects. Fashion refracts social and cultural trends and engages in dialogue with them. It translates them into the various languages it has invented: high fashion, mass fashion, and fast fashion.
Fashion reveals elective affinities with other modern institutions and, from this perspective, contributes to shaping fundamental aspects of subjectivity in late modernity. It plays a crucial role in the formation of modern temporal regimes-that is, in the rhythms, the narratives, and the orientation of people within the present, the past, and the future.
As both a child-and a mechanism of formation-of modernity (classical and late) and of our shared culture, fashion is an open field of sociological knowledge and critique. These complex functions are what this book sets out to examine.
