Hilariously funny and deeply moving

Bewertung am 14.03.2025

Bewertungsnummer: 2438583

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

In this autobiograophy, comedian Trevor Noah tells an endearing story about his childhood in Apartheid South-Africa. Born to a black mother and a white father, he feels he is 'born a crime' in a country in which segregation is not only daily life but also legally enforced. Trevor takes us on a journey through his early life, telling stories about his strict grandmother, his dance-crew in highschool and ultimately his departure from South-Africa. "Born a Crime" is a deeply personal questioning of identity, somethimes tear-jerkingly funny, sometimes tear-jerkingly moving. A book that feels like talking to a good friend.

A wonderful book

When I recently saw the film based on this book on TV, I was very impressed. That's when I decided to read the novel. And now that I've read the novel, I'm even more impressed by this book than by the film. I feel a connection with the novel's heroine Kya, with her life in the swamps, with her fate, with her struggle and how she, as a leper, also faces prejudice. I feel the weather, I feel the people, even if most of them are not well disposed towards Kya. I am captivated by what the author has put on paper here, it has wrapped me up, I don't want to leave. It was and will be a brilliant book when I read it again and again.
