Check & Mate

Das Buch war mega! Super schöne Beeschreibung und Atmosphäre. Man fühlt mit der Hauptperson, versteht ihre Gefühle und weiß und checkt warum sie so fühlt. Super young adult romance.

Ich war überrascht, wie sehr mich die Geschichte gepackt hat. Am Anfang hatte ich noch befürchtet, dass es vielleicht schwierig werden könnte, wegen meinem etwas eingerostetem Schulenglisch, aber die Angst war unbegründet. Die Geschichte ist leicht verständlich und die Schachbegriffe hat man auch schnell drin. Ich bin regelrecht durch die Seiten geflogen und konnte nicht aufhören zu lesen, sodass ich das Buch innerhalb weniger Tage gelesen habe. Der Schreibstil ist locker und die Unterhaltungen so erfrischend, dass ich teilweise gar nicht bemerkt habe, wie viel ich gerade gelesen habe. In Mallory konnte man sich gut hineinversetzen und ihre komplizierte Beziehung zu Nolan hat richtig neugierig gemacht. Nolan war von Anfang an spannend, auch durch die Berichte aus Zeitungen oder die Skandale, von denen Mallory gehört hatte und deswegen bereits ein genaues Bild von ihm hatte. Mallorys Schwestern, besonders Darcy, mochte ich sehr wegen ihrer etwas überdrehten Art und weil sie immer das gesagt hat, was ihr gerade durch den Kopf ging. Das Ende der Geschichte kam für mich jedoch etwas plötzlich und hat für mich noch vieles offen gelassen. Trotzdem mehr als empfehlenswert!

Lots of tension ! I highly recommend this book, it was so heartwarming to read-I loved it! Mallory never wanted to play chess again, till her best friend changes her mind for a charity-event. She didn´t think she would even win a match, especially not against the current world champion Nolan. Nolan wants nothing more, than to play against her for a second time and Mallory starts to play chess again so she can support her family, but doesn´t want them to find out . Now here we are keeping family and chess strictly seperate and then theres Nolan, who would do anything just to play one more match against her.....

I feel happier with every Ali Hazelwood book I read. And after this one in particular. Ever since it came out I've read it multiple times... Hazelwood's previous books have all been centered around women in STEM and in this one her two protagonists are two rivaling chess players falling for each other? I am all in. I love Chess and I love Mallory and I love Nolan and I love the side characters and I love the plot... There really is little to nothing I don't love about this book. Mallory, who never wanted to play chess again after the game tore her family apart, reluctantly agrees to play one game for a charaity event against the notorious "Kingkiller", Nolan, who is the reigning world champion of chess and starting to get bored with the game. Until Mallory ends up checkmating Nolan. Now he want to play her again. It's a fantastic set-up with a lovely cast of characters and a romance that will make you swoon.

Very well written story that makes the heart attach to as well as relate to the characters, and at the same time educates about society and boundaries. Would absolutely recommend to everyone who likes to read a refreshing rivals to lovers story.
