Rezension

It can't be overstated how purely pleasurable The Bee Sting is to read. Murray's brilliant new novel, about a rural Irish clan, posits the author as Dublin's answer to Jonathan Franzen . . . A 650-page slab of compulsive high-grade entertainment, The Bee Sting oozes pathos while being very funny to boot . . . Murray's observational gifts and A-game phrase-making render almost every page - every line, it sometimes seems - abuzz with fresh and funny insights . . . At its core this is a novel concerned with the ties that bind, secrets and lies, love and loss. They're all here, brought to life with captivating vigour in a first-class performance to cherish Observer (Anthony Cummins)

Inside the Hive

Benedikt am 16.05.2025

Bewertungsnummer: 2492200

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

Paul Murray’s The Bee Sting begins with a family in slow collapse: Dickie Barnes, a once-wealthy car dealer, is building a doomsday bunker while his wife Imelda clings to memories of the past; their son PJ flounders through adolescence, and their daughter Cass spirals in college. As Ireland reels from economic downturn, so too does each member of the Barnes family, struggling to find solid ground in a world crumbling around them. Told through multiple perspectives, the novel weaves humor, sorrow, and suspense into a layered and compelling narrative. What makes The Bee Sting so utterly absorbing is the magnetic pull of its storytelling—once you're in, there's no easy way out. It's a novel destined to become a classic, not just for its literary richness, but for the deep psychological insight it offers. Reading from each character's point of view, their actions and motivations feel heartbreakingly justified; yet stepping back, one can't help but recoil from the choices they make, from the selfishness, cowardice, or quiet cruelty that emerges. That duality—of sympathy and repulsion—is what gives the novel its unique and unsettling power. The novel's final narrative shift is nothing short of brilliant. Moving into the second person, Murray pulls the reader directly into the fabric of the story, erasing the boundary between character and audience. It’s an intimate, eerie move that heightens the emotional impact of the conclusion and leaves the reader with a deep, lingering chill

Software Problem beim e-Book

Bewertung am 26.12.2024

Bewertungsnummer: 2371689

Bewertet: eBook (ePUB)
