Graveyard Shift the highly anticipated new book by the author of the BookTok sensation If We Were Villains

After reading If we were villains and loving it, I bought this book without even reading the synopsis and I am happy to say that this was a great blind buy. The story is fairly short and the plot is somewhat predictable, but the true treasure is the friends we made along the way. The characters are memorable and have great chemistry, and it was just a joy to read about their little investigation. The author managed to achieve with few words what others cannot in a bible-length novel. It was also gripping to read about the author's personal life and her take on dark academia. Overall, I loved this book. It was a nice little breather and got me out of a temporary reading slump. Rio is shaping up to become one of my favorite authors and I am eager to see what she comes up with next.

Using seemingly nonsensical describtions the Author manages to paint very beautiful scenes, I mean "anemic streetlamps" is a very creative and fun way to put it. The characters are very well written even if their personalities can be a bit unlikeable. All the "friends"(?) work together to uncover the truth although their reason for doing so varies. It is overall a good mystery where everyone involved does their part. I read through it in one sitting (not a challenge I know) and it really was the perfect late night read. I wanna read more from the author. ~ཐིཋྀ

Fünf Außenseiter mit den unterschiedlichsten Motiven treffen sich jede Nacht auf dem Friedhof einer verlassenen Kirche, um in ihrer Schlaflosigkeit nicht allein zu sein. So weit, so normal. Aber eines Nachts finden sie ein frisch ausgehobenes Grab. Doch der Inhalt ist noch viel seltsamer… Cover und Klappentext lassen hier auf eine kleine, aber feine Horror-Geschichte schließen, irgendwas im Sinne von „Was die Toten bewegt“. Wer das erwartet, wird aber überrascht, die Geschichte ist so ganz anders. Für manche bestimmt enttäuschend, für mich war es trotzdem ein wilder Ritt. Trotz der Kürze braucht es Konzentration, gleich fünf verschiedene Perspektiven werden beleuchtet. Die dazugehörigen Charaktere sind ein wilder Haufen der unterschiedlichsten Menschen, die man sich vorstellen kann, von Barbesitzer, Unistudent, Nachtschichter bis Journalist ist alles dabei. Was sie vereint: Schlaflosigkeit- Insomnia. Die Autorin geht mit dieser Geschichte auf eine Entdeckungsreise in den Schlaf oder auch seine Abwesenheit, spürt der Faszination der Nacht hinterher und erzählt gleichzeitig auch eine irre Story, nicht wirklich Horror, nicht wirklich Science-Fiction, aber irgendwas dazwischen. Pilze kommen vor, en Masse. Stellt es euch vor wie The Last of Us mit Melatonin. Oder eben ohne. Also auf jeden Fall abgefahren und mit fraglichem (offenem) Ende, das einige Leser unzufrieden zurücklassen wird. Aber vielleicht liegt auch darin der Charme. Denn darüber nachdenken wird man auf jeden Fall, vor allem wenn man das danach abgedruckte Essay der Autorin liest. Fazit: Ganz anders als erwartet, aber keine Reise, die ich bereue. Auf Grund der Kürze bleibt nicht viel Zeit für Tiefe und lange Erklärungen, aber am Ende bleibt trotzdem (bei mir) das Gefühl, etwas gelesen zu haben, das ich noch nicht ganz verstehe. Auf jeden Fall ein Buch für einen gemütlichen Herbstabend. Oder eben Halloween.

My jaw was on the floor when I was already at the author's note after 100 pages (which, by the way, should definitely be read). I'm a little sad that M. L. Rio didn't turn this masterpiece into a 400-page novel, but that doesn't make it any less impressive. I don't know how she manages to create this gloomy mood despite the brevity and bring all the characters so close to you. It's brilliant!

M.L. Rio's novella "Graveyard Shift" is the perfect encapsulation of a gloomy fall vibe. Five highly interesting protagonists discover a freshly dug grave in an abandoned graveyard by the old church. Unsuspecting at first, the five insomniacs go on their way, but what they don't know is that this grave has a purpose. The plot develops into a scientific conspiracy and great character developements - despite its rather short length. For me, the novella was r´the perfect read for a gloomy afternoon.
