Between the Acts, Virginia Woolf's final novel, is a haunting meditation on performance, history and the fleeting nature of life. Published posthumously in 1941, Woolf's remarkable novel unfolds over the course of a single summer's day in a country house, just before the beginning of the Second World War. As local villagers gather for an annual pageant due to celebrate English history, the boundary between performance and reality begins to blur.
