An Antarctic Mystery (1897), also known as The Sphinx of the Ice Fields, is a sequel to Edgar Allan Poe's The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. Written by Jules Verne, the novel follows the American narrator, Jeorling, who is stranded on the Kerguelen Islands. He persuades Captain Len Guy of the schooner Halbrane to venture south in search of the missing crew from Poe's story, including Captain Guy's brother, William, who was aboard the lost ship Jane.
As they sail deeper into the Antarctic, the crew encounters perilous conditions, icebergs, storms, and mysteries from previous expeditions. Their journey becomes increasingly dangerous as they search for clues about the fate of Arthur Gordon Pym and the other missing sailors. They find strange artifacts and a frozen corpse, confirming that some of the Jane's crew might have survived longer than expected.
In the end, the crew reaches the mysterious "Sphinx of the Ice Fields," a natural formation linked to the enigmatic ending of Poe's novel. Verne provides some resolution to the unanswered questions from The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym, including what happened to Pym and the others, but he leaves certain aspects of the mystery open to interpretation, especially regarding the nature of the Sphinx.
