Vera zieht mit jeder Seite mehr in den Bann - die 10jährige versucht Liebe und Aufmerksamkeit zu gewinnen in ihrer zusammengewürfelten Familie und in ihrer Schule für begabte Kinder und vor allem versucht sie der Identität ihrer leiblichen Mutter auf die Spur zu kommen. Es ist herrlich zu lesen, wie sie soviel von der Welt der Erwachsenen mitbekommt und ihre eigenen Schlüsse zieht (nicht immer korrekt). Shteyngart schreibt mit viel Herz und Wärme über die verwickelte Welt in der Kinder aus verschiedenen Kulturen, Sprachen und Werten aufwachsen und nimmt uns mit in diese Welt der Menschlichkeit - wo jeder nur versucht, etwas aus seinem zu Leben zu machen.
