The Raven Scholar the masterfully woven and breathtaking epic adult fantasy of cutthroat competition and imperial deceit

Dare I say this was... Magnificent? ‍⬛ What a wild ride this book was, in all the best ways! After struggling with the first few chapters, I started to really get into it when the main action starts, and haven't stopped thinking about it since. This is what epic adult fantasy should be like, characters with interesting backstories, simple wants and needs and quite some life experience to inform their choices and a detailed world-building which is consistent and interesting. In this case I found it very unique with its guardians and their roles, a kind of caste system but it's not mandatory and so much potential for future books! And the plot...! I'm usually someone who isn't easily surprised as I tend to foresee things, but in this case I might have had vague ideas of what was to come, but never to the full extent, so that all the twists and turns kept me on my toes. I think what I liked best about the book was how most, if not all characters, were multi-facetted. All of them had good and bad sides, compassion, love, anger, irrationality, flaws and talents. They made me feel things, so many things, and that's what I love in a good book! Neema was wonderful, and I liked that she is a poc and autistic-coded. Cain is so funny and at the same time so sweet when he wants to. And even the (conceived?) baddies had sides to them that gave them complexity, which was amazing. Nothing was ever only black and white, people had reasons for their motivations, founded in their experiences and backstories and histories. This was definitely one of my highlights so far this year, can't wait to read book two once it comes out! If you're considering reading it, do yourselves a favour and listen to the audiobook narrated by Daphne Kouma. She did an amazing job!!! So many different voices and layered emotions and accents. It was I'm so happy the book lived up to my expectations! Thanks to netgalley and hodder & stoughton for the alc!

Für jemanden wie mich, für die Lesen sehr anstrengend ist und dementsprechend unter einem schnell schwindenden Durchhaltevermögen für das Beenden eines Buches leidet, war The Raven Scholar eine wahre Offenbarung. Die Welt, die Ereignisse, die Charaktere und deren Motivationen, der zynisch-sarkastische Humor der tierischen Charaktere und Antonia Hodgsons Stil haben mich so sehr gepackt, dass ich das Buch kaum aus der Hand legen wollte. Durch die vielschichtigen Ebenen, die die Autorin rund um die Geschehnisse, welche auf dem Murder Mystery aufbauen, geschaffen hat, bietet die Geschichte eine große Re-readability. Dabei war für mich persönlich natürlich nicht alles perfekt. Als Mittdreißiger-Person hatte ich beispielsweise selten den Eindruck, hier Figuren zu begleiten, von denen einige (u.a. die Protagonistin) meinem Alter entsprechen sollen. Zum anderen empfand ich solche Passagen immer wieder leicht verwirrend, in denen gerade ein Vorgang vonstattengeht und plötzlich ein längerer, Hintergrundinformation gebender Schwenk aus der Vergangenheit in den Fließtext eingeschoben wird. Auch hätte ich mir gewünscht, des Öfteren eine detailliertere Beschreibung der unmittelbaren Umgebung zu erhalten, um mir ein besseres Bild von Gesellschaft, Kultur, Ästhetik u.Ä. machen zu können, da die Welt in ihrer Gesamtheit bis zum Schluss leider keine so richtig eigene Identität bekommt. Für das, was mir das Buch geboten hat, ist das Meckern auf hohem Niveau und würde, wenn ich könnte, 10 Sterne vergeben! Bis zum Erscheinen des zweiten Bandes werde ich auf den unangenehmsten heißen Kohlen sitzen und derweil Band 1 auf jeden Fall nochmal lesen!

One of the best reads this year for sure - the protagonists as well as the villains draw you in. The world building was wonderful and the story so addictive, I could not lay this book down.

This book had everything. A little romance, fights, riddles, magic and plot twists. Beautifully written, it was easy to follow the story, the world and magic are great and all in all a really great story. Excited for the next one!

„The Raven Scholar“ punktet mit einer düsteren Atmosphäre und einem wirklich interessanten Gilden-System. Der Einstieg ist brutal und spannend, das Konzept des Turniers hat mich sofort angesprochen. Leider konnte das Buch das hohe Level vom Anfang nicht halten. Für mich gab es im Mittelteil zu viele Durststrecken, in denen die Handlung auf der Stelle trat. Da ich es im Original auf Englisch gelesen habe, haben mich diese Längen leider irgendwann so weit gebracht, dass ich das Buch bei 50 % pausiert habe. Schade, denn die Welt und die Idee dahinter sind wirklich top! Fazit: Wer viel Geduld für Worldbuilding mitbringt, wird die Geschichte mögen. Mir fehlte leider der konstante Spannungsbogen.
