Galatea The instant Sunday Times bestseller

It's official, I would read anything Madeleine Miller writes. Even with this short story she made my heart ache and gripped me with her writing. She beautifully worked out the mysogyny in the Pygmalion myth and gave it a feminist twist. Absolutely worth the read.

Tolle kurze Geschichte. Ich hätte gerne mehr davon gelesen, obwohl ich weiß, dass die Geschichte genau die richtige Länge hat. Hinweis zu den eBook Angeboten: eine Ausgabe hat kein Family Sharing, die beiden anderen Ausgaben aber schon. Hatte nicht aufgepasst und leider die ohne Family Sharing gekauft, die zudem auch noch teurer war.

Although the number of pages is rather sparse, I was immediately hooked. Feminist, with an absolutely grandiose, aesthetic touch. The accompanying drawings in particular were perfectly integrated into the story and give the whole thing its own atmosphere.

Loved it. It was short, it was powerful, it was beautiful and too good to not recommend to anyone you meet afterwards. Madaline Miller's writing will always be one of my favourites. She knows the power of words and she knows how to use them.

After "Circe" and "The Song of Achilles" I simply knew that I had to read this short story by Madeline Miller as well. This story is independent of both of Miller's other works but fits perfectly in this world of Greek mythology she created, highlighting different views and different angles than Ovid and company did before. Galatea is thus in the same vein as Circe, telling the story from the view of a woman. It highlights the bestowed-upon purpose of not only this statue-come-to-life but what was presumably the fate of many women during this time – set in and written. Not to mention today. Thus it's highly satisfying to read about Galatea's inner defiance, the time spent with her daughter, and the ending Miller decided to give both her and the nameless sculptor.
