The Unraveling A Novel

A complete different genre for Vi Keeland. I was excited how this departure towards the thriller genre will be for my liking. Based on the blurb, I roughtly knew, what to expect, but still the beginning of the story, was a little bit hard to get into it. Not that it was badly written, but more this very personal view from Meredith, made it a little bit hard to orient myself in the story. As it was relatively fragmented or desorientating to understand a clear path of the story. Which makes sense, that Meredith IS disorientated, as she has just lost her husband to a tragic car accident (which he was responsible of) and she has to manage her day-to-day life. Like a leaf in the wind she is transported this way or that way, as are her thoughts. Sometimes even circling, which also was kind of clever writing wise. At the beginning I was somewhat assuming, maybe the story is more towards Romantic Suspense, than Thriller, but I was wrong, eventhough there were maybe one or two spicy scenes in place, but never a real love story. As a reader, we only really get to know Meredith, what she things and feels, after her loss and her guild to be somewhat responsible additionally for the death of a mother and her child, as those two were also victims of her husbands car accident. One day she randomly crosses paths with the husband of the killed women, and apparently he seems happy or at least not grieving anymore for his lost family, which is not understandable for Meredith. So she starts to follow him to understand, how he managed to overcome his grief. Until one day, suddenly Gabriel is her patient in her practice (she is a psychotherapist). The lines between patrient and doctor seems to blur, the distance Meredith should have as a doctor to her patient seem to vanish and she starts a dangerous game. Even though it was hard for me to get into the story, after a while there was such a big pull of the story, which made it hard to pause or put the book away. And those twists and turns towards the end. were amazing and cleverly made.

The Unraveling is Vi Keeland‘s debut psychological thriller and after reading and loving her romance books, I was so excited for this book.   I only read thriller’s every now and then and I feel like this is a good start for someone who has never read a thriller but simultaneously for everyone who enjoys thrillers. I feel like this book is best to go in blind and the twists and turns are very surprising and shocking the least you know.   Our protagonist Meredith is a psychiatrist and she had it all from a hockey player husband and they wanted to start a family together. Until this all shattered through an accident. It was really cool to see how you get chapters from the past and in the present and the way all of this was connected was done beyond well.   One of her new patients is Gabriel who is a literary professor. They feel an attraction towards each other, and it’s not only forbidden because of the doctor-patient-dynamic but also because of their past. The story includes trauma, grief, stalking, secrets, romantic and spicy moments and above all twists and turns that I didn’t see coming and led to Meredith’s unraveling. The writing and plot were compelling and enthralling and I was sucked into this story very easily and couldn’t put it down.   Overall, The Unraveling is such a good thriller and I hope to see more from this genre from Vi Keeland. 4 stars.   (ARC kindly provided in exchange for a review.)

I wasn't a fan of thrillers, so this is my exception to this genre. But I thought, if Vi Keeland has written one, I need at least to try it, and now I'm obsessed with it. This is how a non thriller reader stars reading thrillers. That's on you Vi. Oppinion: The first 15% was hard for me to get into the story (but this is the part of being a romance reader), but as soon as I got the hint, it was all easy to follow. And I truly inhaled the whole book. The writing is as always fluid and easy, even for non native reader. The story is interesting, intriguing, with spice and thrill, and with unexpected twists. I found it great to connect the dots by myself and following Meredith on her darker side. She is relatable for me. I could understand her, even if I would not follow her steps. But at least it's understandable how she's doing and her reasons. The main subject followed in this book wasn't as heavy as I thought primarily. The twists just blown my mind with the tension filled scenes, and there are a few. But I still can't get over the end. I think there must be at least another book following Meredith's life. I truly need a little more into this. (When you read it, you understand it) Conclusion: If you're not a thriller reader before this, you become one addicted to them. Vi just got me into a genre I wasn't even open up to until now. So, thank you for showing me the other side of the bridge. This story is intriguing and interesting with a little spice and thrill. Yet, Meredith can’t bring herself to turn him away and becomes further entangled. With her life and career continuing to unravel, it appears that things could not get any worse…until they do.
