Wie der Autor auch agiert die Hauptperson Tunde, ein in Nigeria geborener Harvard Professor, unter anderem als Lehrkörper für Fotografie an der Universität in Neuengland. In dieser losen Ansammlung von Geschichten und Erinnerungen geht es um Literatur, Fotografie, Rasse, menschlichem Überleben zwischen Massakern, Erdbeben, um koloniale, kriegerische Gewalt, um Musik und Malerei. An der komplexen Kolonialgeschichte zwischen Indianern und Weißen sollte die problematische Darstellung von Wahrheit und Geschichte vom Leser überdacht werden. Das bildhaft beschriebene Alltagsleben und der Kampf ums Überleben in Lagos wird vorgestellt. Wie auch Gedanken zu Rassismus, Herkunft von Gemälden, Dekolonisation und Restitution von Kulturgütern. Der Duft der afrikanischen, schwarzen Seife ose dudu erweckt in Tunde Erinnerungen an seine Kindheit in Ojodu, Lagos, an die Nigerianische Künstlerin Otobong Nkanga und ihre Kunstprojekte. Ein weiteres Highlight sind die Reflexionen über die Benin Bronzen, über das Massaker der Britischen Armee im Jahre 1897. Er stellt diese Nigerianische Kunst des 15. Jahrhunderts mit Turners Bild Slavers Throwing Overboard the Dead and Dying und dem Bild Landscape With Burning City des flämischen Meisters Herri met de Bles in einen Kontext. Das Zusammenleben von Tunde und Sadoko, deren quälender Stille und doch ersehnter Berührung, spielt hier auch eine Rolle. Der Schreibstil auf 256 Seiten ist nicht provokant, der Duktus eher ruhig, meditativ. Insgesamt ein labyrinthisches Geschichts-Puzzle, ein Bericht über Lagos und eine Lektion über Rassismus.
