"The Corner House Girls on a Tour" by Grace Brooks Hill follows the adventures of the Kenway sisters-Ruth, Agnes, Tess, and Dot-as they embark on a journey in their newly acquired automobile. The story begins with the girls preparing for a picnic at Marchenell Grove, accompanied by their friend Neale O'Neil. Along the way, they encounter various challenges, including a stubborn pony named Jonas and a dangerous rattlesnake blocking their path. The girls also meet Mrs. Heard, a lively woman who shares the story of her nephew's stolen automobile, adding an element of mystery to their journey. As the narrative unfolds, the Kenway sisters navigate through humorous and tense situations, showcasing their resourcefulness and camaraderie. Agnes, the most adventurous of the sisters, is particularly intrigued by the mystery of the stolen car and the involvement of a suspicious character known as Saleratus Joe. The story highlights the girls' determination to enjoy their outing despite the obstacles they face, including an encounter with a rowdy crowd at the picnic grounds. Grace Brooks Hill weaves a tale that combines elements of adventure, humor, and mystery, capturing the essence of early 20th-century life and the excitement of new experiences. The Kenway sisters' journey is not only a physical one but also a journey of personal growth and discovery, as they learn to handle unexpected challenges with grace and courage.
