"The Corner House Girls Growing Up" by Grace Brooks Hill is a delightful narrative that follows the lives of the Kenway sisters-Ruth, Agnes, Tess, and Dot-as they navigate the challenges and joys of growing up in the quaint town of Milton. The story begins with Tess's fascination with aeroplanes, leading to the creation of an aerial tramway with the help of their neighbor, Sammy Pinkney, and Neale O'Neil, a close family friend. This whimsical project reflects the imaginative and adventurous spirit of the children. Ruth, the eldest sister, is portrayed as a responsible and caring figure, often acting as a mother to her younger siblings. Her encounter with a peculiar old gentleman at the railway station showcases her bravery and quick thinking, as she saves him from a potential accident. This incident, while seemingly minor, hints at the interconnectedness of the characters' lives and foreshadows future developments. The narrative also touches on the social dynamics within the Kenway household, highlighting the interactions between the sisters, their friends, and the household staff, including the humorous Uncle Rufus and the practical Mrs. MacCall. The arrival of guests, Cecile and Luke Shepard, adds a layer of excitement and anticipation, as the sisters prepare to entertain and engage with new friends. Throughout the story, themes of family, friendship, and personal growth are woven seamlessly, offering readers a glimpse into the everyday adventures and challenges faced by the Corner House girls. The book captures the essence of childhood curiosity and the passage into adolescence, making it a charming and relatable read for audiences of all ages.
