Da Empoli mischt Fiktion mit frei erfundenen Protagonisten (Baranov, Ksenia) mit tatsächlichen Geschehnissen und Personen. Alles dreht sich natürlich um den Tsar, seine Herkunft und seinen polititischen Werdegang sowie seine imperialen und weltanschaulichen Ideen, Gelüste und Handlungen. Auch seine Sicht der russischen Seele und der Sehnsucht der Russen nach Ordnungund einer starken, wenn auch menschenverachtenden Führung kommt nicht zu kurz. Trotz teilweise langer Passagen ist der Roman flüssig geschrieben, er wirkt authentisch und ist aktuell.
