Emotional, gripping, intense. That’s how I would describe this book in three words. I love reading, and I love Marvel—that’s what made me pick up this book. And let me tell you, I was not disappointed. I already knew the main character from the movies and liked him there. At this point, it’s important to mention that this book does not take place in the usual MCU timeline. But even though the story is set in an alternate universe, the character(s) almost feels the same to me. Even though the book is marketed as a children’s book, I would say the story is actually quite dark and realistic, especially as it progresses. There are funny and lighthearted moments, but anyone familiar with the character from the MCU knows just how intense and dark things can get very quickly. So here's a little warning: The book also touches on heavy topics like self-harm, guilt and emotional burden, identity struggles, memory loss, violence, torture, and murder—subjects that could be intense for younger readers but make the story more compelling and layered for older audiences. The story moves across different timelines, following two compelling characters. In 1941, sixteen-year-old Bucky Barnes is eager to join the US army, but obstacles keep getting in his way. When he’s accepted into a British Special Operations program, he seizes the chance to become a hero—but London quickly becomes dangerous when he finds himself on the run from a mysterious assassin. By 1954, a mysterious figure known as the Winter Soldier emerges as the Soviet Union’s deadliest weapon. Trained to follow orders without question and guided by a handler who knows him better than he knows himself, he carries out lethal missions across the globe. As the story unfolds, events from the different timelines start to overlap, revealing a truth neither character fully understands yet—one that will change and impact their lives forever. This multi-layered timeline makes the story not only thrilling and action-packed, but also emotional and intense, perfectly capturing the essence of the character fans already love. Must read for any Marvel and MCU fan!

A must-read for Bucky fans

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

This book is both funny and heart shattering. While this is based on comic Bucky, it's also perfect for MCU fans. It captures everything from a young determined Bucky, to a love story that couldn't be more fitting, to funny dialogue, to the painful journey of him figuring himself out again after everything that was done to him. If you thought what was shown in Captain America: The Winter Soldier was painful for him and the viewers, this book is so much worse in the best way possible. If you think of reading this, that should be enough of a reason to do it. I would personally describe it as a masterpiece and I'm excited to read more books by Mackenzie Lee!
