In this 1983 short story—the only short story Morrison ever wrote—we meet Twyla and Roberta, who have known each other since they were eight years old and spent four months together as roommates in St. Bonaventure shelter. Das Buch ist ein Spiel mit unseren Vorurteilen. Wir treffen 2 junge Frauen und begleiten sie auf ihrem späteren Lebensweg, wo sie sich immer wieder begegnen - und nicht ohne Konflikte. Die Tatsache, dass sie unterschiedlichen Ethnien angehören, wird schnell klar, aber wer in welches Schema gehört wird offen gelassen.
Ich habe mich immer wieder dabei erwischt, wie ich überlegt habe, wer ist nun weiß und wer ist schwarz. Der Konflikt steht im Zentrum der Handlungsstränge, aber letztendlich stehen wir mit unserem 'Bedürfnis' der einfachen Zuordnung zu einer Ethnie ziemlich verloren da.
Tipp: Das Vorwort enthält viele Spoiler und sollte besser ein Nachwort sein.
