Rezension

An inspired mash-up of Jane Eyre, Ann Radcliffe s The Mysteries of Udolpho, Dracula, Rebecca and that 1958 classic sci-fi movie, The Blob . . . Inventive and smart, [Mexican Gothic is] injecting the Gothic formula with some fresh blood. NPR s Fresh Air

Stylish and edgy. . . While the book draws inspiration from Gothic classics like Rebecca and Jane Eyre there is a spunky female protagonist and an ancient house filled with disturbing secrets its archly intelligent tone and insightful writing make Mexican Gothic an original escape to an eerie world. New York Times

[An] irresistibly dark feminist reimagining of the Gothic fantasy novel . . . It s all wonderfully creepy, blending chilling scenes of horror with classic Gothic tropes for a seductive and subversive tale. A book to devour in a few very thrilling sittings. Vanity Fair

The author s postcolonial spin on the gothic tradition evokes the usual suspects: Daphne du Maurier, Emily Brontë, Mary Shelley, even Anne Radcliffe. Like those authors, Moreno-Garcia works in a tradition in which chills and thrills tap into elemental cultural fears runaway science, carnal passion. But to these she adds a more politically inflected horror, both ancient and timely. Los Angeles Times

A new classic of the genre . . . alluring and foreboding, ambiguous and beautiful. And like its heroine Noemí, its ambitious, determined, and well worth getting to know. Chicago Review of Books

This twisty horror fantasy is engrossing and wonderfully repulsive. . . . This is a must-read for fans of gothic writers like the Brontës, Daphne du Maurier, and Shirley Jackson, and also for those who enjoy the feminist, surreal fiction of Carmen Maria Machado. Buzzfeed

Deliciously creepy . . . Read it with your lights on and know that strange dreams might begin to haunt you, as they haunted Noemí. Vox

Masterful . . . a gloriously moody adventure, spooky, smart, and wry. Chic, no-nonsense Noemí Taboada is one hell of a tour guide through this world of mystery, scandal and spirits. Victor LaValle, author of The Changeling

Mexican Gothic terrified and fascinated me. Silvia Moreno-Garcia proves once again that she's a genre-jumping wizard, one of the most exciting and necessary authors writing today. Charlie Jane Anders, nationally bestselling author of The City in the Middle of the Night

Darkly brilliant and captivating . . . Readers who love old houses and family secrets will devour this book (as I did!). The setting itself High Place, with its reputation for swallowing the dreams of young women is a character in this marvelously fantastical novel, stretching from glamorous 1950s Mexican high society to the crumbling pride of an abandoned silver mine. Silvia Moreno-Garcia enthralls with this twisty tale of love and betrayal. Yangsze Choo, New York Times bestselling author of The Night Tiger and The Ghost Bride

    It's everything it promises to...

It's everything it promises to be. Very well written, you can't put it out of your hand. Mexico in the 50s, spooky scenery and a strong female character. Suitable for long rainy evenings.

    Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

    haunting and very nicely written!

Quickly atmospheric and understandable character buildup at first. The protagonist impresses with realistic features appropriate to her time and age. Even though I found some decisions strange, it was nice to see how she didn't want to abandon her cousin and stood by her word. The Doyle family and the creepy mansion slowly but surely develop into a hell ride for Noemi and she proves backbone, integrity and strength of will until the end of the story. The love story has me admittedly not quite persuaded because of the circumstances and the life of Francis (you have to read more detailed ;) ). One could assume that until the middle of the work the author deliberately restrains the violence, but the last third blows you away in terms of brutality, horror and speed. Overall, really a great book!

    Not for everyone

This book suprised me in everything. With the Main character Noemi who is send to look after her married cousin, we get an interesting story. The setting is an old high house where nothing seems normal and the rules that are set are not allowed to be broken. What feels to be a book about a haunted house turns into a horror novel full of goor and disgusting details. Please read the trigger warnings. I was stunned and would read this again because the plottwist was to good to be true and you will never expect this.

    Mexican Gothic

A worrisome letter from her cousin Catalina brings Noemí to a remote place called „High Place“. Only a year ago, Catalina married Virgil Doyle and moved with him in the mansion close to a former mine where the British family made a fortune. Even though it is 1950, there is still no electricity in the house and Noemí feels like being in a British novel of the 19th century. Her cousin is in an awful state, not only physically, but also mentally and she does not only rely on the medication of the family doctor but also got some tincture from a local healer. Strange rules make it difficult for Noemí to adapt to life in the house and it does not take too long until she herself feels that something strange is going on in there. She has very lively nightmares and cannot get rid of the impression that the walls are talking to her. Is she also going mad like Catalina? Quite often you open a novel and while reading you have the impression that the title and the plot do hardly have any connection. In Silvia Moreno-Garcia‘s book „Mexican Gothic“, however, the title perfectly announces what you will get: a wonderful Gothic horror story in the style of the 18th and 19th century. A spooky old mansion in a remote place without any available help close by, a mysterious cemetery whose inhabitants seem to wander about, nightmares, terror and morbidity accomplish it. Noemí is presented as an educated yet a bit shallow young woman who cares more about partying and having fun than worrying about her family. Therefore, she only reluctantly follows her father‘s orders to put an eye on Catalina‘s situation. When she arrives at High Place, she continues her slightly contemptuous behaviour towards the Dolye family. Only after having talked to Catalina is she moved a bit and willing to help her cousin. Her stubbornness prevents her from being absorbed by the strange activities in the house. Soon, however, the fine line between reality and insanity becomes more and more blurry, not only is neither the protagonist nor the reader sure if Noemí‘s dreams are only very vivid or if there are frightening things under way. And then, the horror show really begins. I totally adored how the author gradually drags the young woman and the reader into this story which oscillates between fascinations and abhorrence. Even though you are well aware that most of what happens cannot be real, it is easy to imagine that in such an old house, ghosts could roam and walls could talk. A magnificent read which transports you to a time long gone and a world where much more is possible.
