I mostly chose the book based on its cover, so I dove into the story completely unaware of what to expect. Since then, I've been meaning to read more works by C. S. Pacat! It's been quite a while since I read a fantasy novel that truly captivated me and left me torn, crying and staring at a wall (- especially with THAT cliffhanger. I’d recommend having the second volume ready (thank me later <3))! The dark plot immediately pulls you in, encouraging you to uncover the secrets of this fantasy world. Just when you think you've understood the characters and the storyline, everything suddenly takes a completely different turn. || • atmospheric set in london around 1820 • dark vs light • chosen one • found family • enemies to lovers (the slow burn is slow burning) • queer

Loved the world building and all of the characters except for maybe one! The plot twist was not as unexpected but that did not make the story any less good to me it just made the whole journey even more enjoyable! The end actually made me curse out loud because it ended at such a tricky part and I wanted to know how this whole story goes on! Thankfully I bought both of the books together and can read right on. Waiting for the second one would have probably killed me! I especially loved the strange and somewhat spicy tension between James and Will. Its like...nothing REALLY happens while at the same time A LOT happens! ♥
