On The Principal Portraits Of Shakespeare is a book written by George Scharf, originally published in 1864. The book is a detailed analysis of the various portraits of William Shakespeare that existed during that time, including those that were believed to be genuine and those that were considered to be fake or doubtful. Scharf's book provides a comprehensive overview of the history of Shakespearean portraiture, tracing the development of the different styles and techniques used by artists over the centuries. He also examines the various controversies surrounding the authenticity of certain portraits, as well as the debates over the physical appearance of Shakespeare himself. The book is divided into several chapters, each of which focuses on a specific portrait or group of portraits. Scharf provides detailed descriptions of each portrait, including its provenance, history, and artistic merits. He also includes reproductions of many of the portraits, allowing readers to see them for themselves and make their own judgments about their authenticity and quality. Overall, On The Principal Portraits Of Shakespeare is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of Shakespearean portraiture or the life and works of William Shakespeare. Scharf's meticulous research and insightful analysis make this book a must-read for scholars, students, and enthusiasts alike. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
