Epigrams of Martial Englished by Divers Hands offers a comprehensive exploration of one of the most influential Roman poets, providing a selection of his sharp, satirical, and often provocative works. Martial, known for his witty and biting commentary on the social, political, and sexual norms of ancient Rome, is celebrated for his ability to encapsulate the essence of Roman life in short, concise epigrams. The book includes both original Latin texts and various English translations that showcase Martial's literary genius, offering readers a glimpse into the complexities of Roman society through humor, satire, and occasional obscenity. These epigrams reveal Martial's views on everything from the decadent lifestyles of the elite to the struggles of slaves, making his work a fascinating snapshot of the ancient world.
This edition of Epigrams of Martial Englished by Divers Hands also highlights the lasting influence of his work on English literature, particularly in the 16th and 17th centuries, when poets like Ben Jonson and Robert Herrick drew inspiration from his sharp wit and concise form. Featuring a rich collection of translations from various time periods, the book provides a unique insight into Martial's impact on poetic tradition, demonstrating how his themes of social criticism, flattery, and humor continue to resonate across generations. The thoughtful selection of epigrams and their accompanying translations offer both scholars and casual readers a deeper appreciation of Martial's wit and his significant place in the canon of classical literature.
