„Mr. Malcom’s List“ is a historical romance novel partly reminiscent of „Pride and Prejudice“. When Julia Thistlewaite is rejected by Mr. Malcom, the most eligible bachelor around, her pride is considerably hurt. Even more so when she learns that there‘s a list of qualifications his future wife has to meet and she somehow fell short. Vowing to give him a taste of his own medicine she invites her friend Selina Dalton and uses her to do just that. At first, I felt like „Mr. Malcom’s List“ was going to be a quick and fun read for me, but as sweet as it is at times, it got old quite fast. The story is not unique, yet overall enjoyable and I quite like Selina as a character. Unlike many of the others she seems to have a conscience, is kind and good-natured. Julia, on the other hand, is just irritating. She is immature, self-centered and childish, doesn’t care about anyone’s feelings other than her own and is highly manipulative. I get that she got her feelings hurt, but her insistence on seeing her plan through no matter what really got on my nerves after a while. I don’t know why, but I expected this book to be reminiscent of „Pride and Prejudice“ and the essence of it is indeed there, but „Mr. Malcom’s List“ can’t hold a candle to Austen’s classic by a long shot. Maybe I went into it with the wrong expectations. Overall, this is not a bad book by any means, it just wasn‘t my favorite. If you enjoy historical settings and are looking for something light and breezy and maybe even a little silly, you should definitely give this book a try.
