In the winter of 1937, the village of Okamura is abuzz with excitement over the forthcoming wedding of a son of the grand Ichiyanagi family. But amid the gossip over the approaching festivities, there is also a worrying rumour - it seems a sinister masked man has been asking questions about the Ichiyanagis around the village.
Then, on the night of the wedding, the Ichiyanagi family are woken by a terrible scream, followed by the sound of eerie music - death has come to Okamura, leaving no trace but a bloody samurai sword, thrust into the pristine snow outside the house. The murder seems impossible, but amateur detective Kosuke Kindaichi is determined to get to the bottom of it.
Seishi Yokomizo (1902-81) was one of Japan's most famous and best-loved mystery writers. He was born in Kobe and spent his childhood reading detective stories, before beginning to write stories of his own, the first of which was published in 1921. He went on to become an extremely prolific and popular author, best known for his Kosuke Kindaichi series, which ran to 77 books, many of which were adapted for stage and television in Japan. The Honjin Murders is the first Kosuke Kindaichi story, and regarded as one of Japan's great mystery novels. It won the first Mystery Writers of Japan Award in 1948 but has never been translated into English, until now.

With great books, I often struggle to find the right words to describe them. For this one, I'm at a complete loss. And yet, I could talk endlessly about the brilliance of this masterpiece. 'The Honjin Murders' is simply phenomenal. I don't even know where to begin. It's thrilling, exciting, addictive, a real page-turner, fantastically written, and even manages to be witty and humorous in many places, while remaining strictly focused when the plot demands it! The characters are all realistic and believable, evoking a genuine sense of affection and connection, just as you should feel for characters in a novel. At no point do you get the feeling that anything about the protagonists or the plot is over the top or exaggerated. Every sentence, every conversation, and every little detail is pointed and serves a purpose, culminating in a novel with unparalleled entertainment value! I haven't been so glued to the pages of a book in a long time as I was with this new edition of this Japanese classic. Books like this show that there are pearls and treasures hidden in the past of the global literary landscape, and I'm always grateful when clever publishers and translators dare to tackle these classics and bring them to the Western and/or German-speaking world. Thanks to them, I was able to enjoy this masterpiece and will now count this book among my absolute favorites forever! Need I say more? 'The Honjin Murders' is an incredibly great and unique work of art!
