Between jagged peaks and candlelit inns, Tyrol shows its grain in Clive Holland's vivid portrait of a mountain province at the heart of Europe. Hear the mountains speak plainly. Part travelogue and ethnography, this work of Edwardian travel writing moves along roads, passes, and river valleys of the Austrian Alps region, stopping for workaday detail as readily as for scenery. Holland notices how communities organise their days and seasons: farming and forestry, pilgrim routes, local dress, craftwork, and the small rituals that bind neighbours together. His attention to Tyrolean folk traditions and alpine village life makes the book as pleasurable as it is informative, a classic of Austrian mountain culture that rewards both the curious traveller and dedicated armchair travel reading. First issued as an illustrated travel book, it offers a grounded sense of place that modern guides rarely attempt. As a record of fin-de-siecle Austria, Tyrol and its People has lasting value beyond leisure reading, standing as a European studies reference for the social textures of a region shaped by borders, language, and Habsburg Empire travel. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. For collectors of travel literature, it belongs with the great unabridged travel classic narratives of the Continent; for casual readers, it is superb company - humane, attentive, richly atmospheric, and always curious about the people behind the panorama.
