Meet Tirunelveli before the Raj. History begins in the dust. Robert Caldwell traces the fortunes of the Tinnevelly region across temple towns, palayams, and shifting alliances, ending in the cession to british 1801. Written with the eye of an administrator and the patience of a field scholar, this colonial era district history turns names, boundaries, and disputes into a readable human map of power. Part political chronicle, part historical gazetteer narrative, it follows the rise of local chiefs, revenue settlements, and the pressures of east india company rule within madras presidency administration. For readers of 18th century madras india, Caldwell offers a grounded account of how policies travelled from Fort St George to the southern frontier, and how communities responded. It stands as a british raj primary sources companion, rich in place-names and institutional detail for indian history research reference, as well as genealogy and local history. Focused on the tirunelveli district tamil nadu, this work remains a key window into the making of modern district governance and the contested handover of sovereignty. Its measured prose and citations make it indispensable to students, travellers, and armchair historians alike. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today -- a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. Whether you are browsing a public domain ebook for context or building a classic reprint edition library, Caldwell's history rewards close reading and looks handsome on the shelf.
