To understand the New Testament, you must first step into its world. Here, history comes vividly alive. In this Second Division (Volume II) of Emil Schurer's classic A History of the Jewish People in the Time of Jesus Christ, the intricate landscape of Second Temple Judaism history unfolds: the institutions, beliefs and expectations that shaped the Jewish people in Jesus' time and set the stage for Judaism and early Christianity. Drawing on ancient sources, especially Josephus and New Testament writings, Schurer offers a meticulous scholarly Jewish history of first-century Roman Judea and the wider Palestine in the time of Jesus. He traces political powers, religious parties, social conditions and intellectual currents, creating a richly layered New Testament background study and academic Bible reference that has informed generations of research. At once rigorous and readable, this volume speaks to seminary theology students, historians, pastors seeking a deeper Bible study resource, and thoughtful readers who want to grasp the Jewish context of the Gospels with clarity and nuance. A landmark of nineteenth-century scholarship, Schurer's work remains a touchstone for understanding how Jewish life and thought framed the rise of the earliest Christian communities. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
