Behind quiet churchyards and worn stone towers lies a rich, layered record of Derbyshire faith and community. Every stone has a story. In Notes on the Churches of Derbyshire, Vol. IV, J. Charles Cox completes his classic county church survey with the Hundred of Morleston and Litchurch and a substantial general supplement, capturing local ecclesiastical history at the high point of Victorian antiquarian study. With a meticulous eye for parish church architecture, fittings, and fabric, Cox records church monuments and inscriptions, chantries, chapels, and memorials, preserving a vivid snapshot of Derbyshire religious heritage in the later 19th century. For genealogists, local historians, and anyone tracing families rooted in Derbyshire Morleston and Litchurch, the detailed notes on clergy, benefactors, and gravestone inscriptions form an unrivalled genealogy research resource and local history reference. Students of 19th century church history and English parish churches will find in Cox's measured descriptions and historical digressions a touchstone for understanding how medieval and early modern buildings were seen at the time of their Victorian restorations, making this volume a key text among Victorian county histories. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure. Prepared with respect for the original scholarship while allowing smooth reading for modern audiences, this edition invites both casual readers of local history and serious collectors of classic ecclesiastical studies to rediscover a cornerstone work of Derbyshire religious heritage.
