Well Met

Emily hat sich gerade frisch getrennt und zieht zu ihrer Schwester in die Kleinstadt Willow Creek, um diese nach einem Unfall zu pflegen. Durch ihre Nichte wird sie in die Renaissance Faire als Freiwillige verstickt. Proben jeden Samstag und den ganzen Sommer über an den Wochenenden verkleidet durch den Wald rennen? So hat sie sich ihre Zeit bei ihrer Schwester nicht vorgestellt. Da kann ihr der griesgrämige Englischlehrer, der für das Event verantwortlich ist, gestohlen bleiben. Wenn sie nur nicht immer an ihn denken müsste, vor allem wenn er ihr in seinem Piratenkostüm auf der Veranstaltung über den Weg läuft. Denn dort verhält sich Simon viel freier und achtet nicht kleinlichst auf jedes Detail. Eigentlich wollte Emily wieder fort sobald ihre Schwester wieder alleine zurechtkommt, und doch fühlt sie sich in Willow Creek immer wohler. Das Buch war perfekt für den Urlaub und den Sommer, da der Großteil des Buches selbst im Sommer spielt. Und es war einfach so eine süße Geschichte. Das Buch ist aus Emilys Sicht geschrieben und so haben wir auch ihren Wissenstand. Die anderen Bewohner kennen die Renaissance Faire schon seit Jahren und haben ihre Insiderwitze und kennen die Abläufe. Es war schön, das alles nach und nach kennenzulernen. Ich habe noch nichts Vergleichbares gelesen und habe mir auch Bilder solcher Märkte angesehen. Für mich ist es vielleicht am ehesten vergleichbar mit den Mittelaltermärkten auf den Weihnachtsmärkten, auf denen ich schon war. Die Idee war für mich einfach erfrischend anders und hat mir beim Lesen viel Spaß bereitet. Es spricht dabei aber auch noch ernstere Themen an und ist nicht nur eine RomCon (Simons Gründe die Renaissance Faire zu leiten). Das Cover vom ersten Band gefällt mir farblich richtig gut. Dieses grün/türkis trifft genau meinen Geschmack.

This year I've had really good luck when it comes to reading debut novels. Jen DeLuca's "Well Met" is just the latest one that had me totally enraptured. As of late, Emily hasn't had the best of luck when it comes to her private life. When she moves in with her injured sister and takes over her niece's life as the appointed Adult in Charge things finally start to look up again. Even the Renaissance Faire she agrees to participate in helps lifting her spirits. If only Simon, one of the teachers involved, wouldn't constantly ruffle her feathers... This romantic comedy is one of the most enrapturing ones I've ever read. I love the concept, the setting, the characters and their interactions. Cards on the table, I am a huge fan of the hate-to-love-trope, but I've rarely seen it executed as well as in this case. It comes across authentically and not only caused me to laugh out loud at numerous occasions, but also made me root for the pair from their very first interaction. Their chemistry is off the charts! The Faire as a setting and the role-playing therein add to the novel's fun factor in ways I did not anticipate. Ultimately, "Well Met" is not just about the love story, though. It's about family, friendship and standing up for oneself, which makes it so much more well-rounded and real. If you are a fan of romantic comedies, I highly recommend you read this book. It really is one of the best ones out there.
