Dieses Buch ist einfach wundervoll. Der Schreibstil ist wie Butter auf dem Brot und die Geschichte packend. Von Anfang an war ich absolut hingerissen von den Charakteren und ihren Geschichten und hoffte, dass auch ja niemand sterben würde - die Geschichte geschieht hauptsächlich an der französischen Front im Jahre 1917, kein schönes Setting für eine Geschichte von Freundschaft, Hoffnung und Liebe. Und doch hat dies perfekt geklappt. Ich persönlich kann mich nicht entscheiden wer mein Lieblingscharakter ist; Hazel, ein eher stilles Mädchen aus London, die das Piano spielt, oder vielleicht James, auch aus England, der ein sensibler und gutherziger, junger Mensch mit einem Traum vom Architektenberuf ist, Colette, die hofft durch das Trösten anderer selber Trost zu erlangen oder Aubrey, ein schwarzer Soldat, dessen außerordentliches Talent am Piano leider keinen Rassismus stummstellt. Eine atemberaubende Geschichte, die einen in den Bann zieht.
