This was my first Richard Powers and will likely not be my last. In The Overstory we meet several different characters who are introduced in the first part, each given a chapter, which gives the first part a short story collection feel. In the course of the novel, some of their story lines will intersect, others won't ever meet. Each in their own way will grapple with our connection to nature and humanity's impact on the planet. I don't think it is an understatement to say that The Overstory not only made me look at our natural environment differently but also made me examine my own relationship to the environment and the people I meet. Safe to say I loved it and already gifted a friend a copy for her birthday.
