    Andere Geschichtsstunde

    A Historical Masterpiece ‍↕️

I absolutely LOVED this book! And yes, I also loved that it was written in the style of a history book—even though I didn’t know that going in. At first, the beginning was a bit tricky to get into, but I quickly found my rhythm and soon I was flying through the pages. The way the story is told makes the world feel vast, rich, and incredibly alive. Every chapter is packed with detail, intrigue, and unforgettable moments that pull you deeper into the history of the Targaryens. It’s the kind of book that leaves you in awe, wanting to savor every page while simultaneously racing to see what happens next. Truly a must-read for anyone who loves epic tales and masterful storytelling.

    Impressive world-building

One of the main reasons to read “Fire and Blood” is the impressive world-building of George R. R. Martin: there are several continents with different languages, cultures, customs, and religions that all echo the real world — and that’s why the book resonates so strongly. “Fire and Blood” starts about 300 years before “A Game of Thrones”. Written as an in-universe history book from Westeros with sources of varying reliability, it’s an entertaining and worthwhile read, even more so alongside HBO’s “House of the Dragon,” which adapts parts of it, fills in the gaps a history text inevitably leaves, and shows other sides of characters where the history book is biased. The show only covers about a third of the book: the Westerosi civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. This is understandably the most gripping section, with all its drama and multi-faceted characters like Rhaenyra, Alicent, Daemon, Aemond, and more. But “Fire and Blood” has more to offer, as it begins some 130 years before the Dance, with the story of Aegon the Conqueror, the first Targaryen king of Westeros, and how he united the Seven Kingdoms (a tale soon to come to screen in another HBO spin-off). The book isn’t without weaknesses: at times Martin goes into excessive detail, and some chapters feel unnecessary. Still, the characters are vivid, the storytelling is rich, and it’s a fantastic addition to “A Song of Ice and Fire”. George R. R. Martin has announced a second volume of “Fire and Blood”, which is expected to cover the remaining ~150 years of Targaryen reign up to King Aerys II, the Mad King — father of Daenerys Targaryen.

    The bloody history of Westeros

If you haven't read ASOIAF yet: Don' read this book. It's not well suited for everyone. It is a historical book so there isn't as much action as in ASOIAF, but if you're a Westeros fan as I am: Read it.
