„A truly path-breaking achievement.” Robert B. Pippin
"A masterpiece." Michael S. Rosen
Kant claimed that prior to his “Critique of Pure Reason” of 1781, there had been no philosophy at all. In 1806, Hegel declared that with his “Phenomenology of Spirit”, the course of philosophy had come full circle and was effectively stalled for good. If both had been right with their assertions, the history of philosophy, which we normally take to have lasted two and a half milleniae, would be reduced to just 25 years. This book is the attempt to comprehend and understand the one thought – that philosophy actually begins in 1781 and ends in 1806. It is decidedly not another contribution to the popular historical genre of philosophy in the way of "From Kant to Hegel"; an overview of the epoch is not intended. Instead, the author examines the reasons that led Kant and Hegel to state their claims as well as the steps that lead from Kant's 'beginning' to Hegel's 'end' in such a short period of time. He comes to the surprising conclusion that both Kant and Hegel are right in an unexpected but nevertheless substantial sense. For this book, Eckart Förster, who teaches at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore (USA), received the renowned Kuno Fischer Prize of the University of Heidelberg in 2017. It is awarded for "outstanding works in the field of the history of philosophy"; previous laureates have included Ernst Cassirer, Hans Blumenberg, Werner Beierwaltes, Kurt Flasch and Dieter Henrich.
