The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue A Novel. Stonewall Honor Book

This story is about Monty, a rich spoiled boy and his way to become a man. He is allowed one more bit of freedom in the form of a trip to Europe, before he is supposed to take up responsibility. The grand tour was a typical way in the 18th century to close the chapter of youth for rich teenagers. So, Monty is ready to conquer the world with his best friend (and secret crush) Percy and unfortunately his sister too. The three of them are to discover more new things than they could have imagined. And Monty in particular has to change his point of view to imrove his empathy. The characters are great. I liked them all a lot, even Monty the spoiled brat. I can't remeber when the last time was that I shipped a couple as hard as I did Monty and Percy! Didn't know historic gay/bi romances were my thing, but apparently they are! I'll definitely read the second book in the series. Mackenzi Lee's writing style is so fluent and easy to read.

Dieses Buch hatte einfach alles - ein turbulentes Abenteuert, eine sehr interessante Handlung, liebevoll und glaubwürdig gestaltete Charaktere und nachvollziehbare Charakterentwicklung. Ich kann es nur weiterempfehlen!

I’m pretty sure this should have been fantasy, because this was just too much for a simple love story. I expected a period romance, two friends touring Europe and falling in love midway through and instead I got highwaymen, alchemy and pirates. And not only the plot is a lot, the characters have a lot to deal with as well: abuse, homophobia, racism, death, sexism, ableism, alcoholism. They get robbed and kidnapped, punched, drugged, shot at and I’m pretty sure I forgot a few things so feel free to add to the list. Amidst all this we have a love story that basically drowns in this crazy amount of plot and keeps getting interrupted by miscommunication. It was as frustrating as it sounds. I tried, I really tried to like this but I feel like the author made it her personal goal to make sure I wouldn’t. This was not for me, sorry.
