This book plays a 100 years before the main events of "Ice and Fire" and gives insights into the relationship of Targaryen princes and into the commoners lifes. The attentionate reader may realise that these short stories of two characters are far more important than on the first glance. If one is more interested in general Westeros history, I´d recommend "Fire and Blood".

THis book is about a huge hedge knight and his diminutive squire Egg, who actually is Aegon V. Targaryen, later also called Aegon the Unlikely. Back then he still is a boy of ten or something. Dunk and Egg fight in tournies, travel to Dorne and are pulled into an intrigue to topple the king. Good as a standalone but even better if you know the ASOIAF series. The information of this book also helps you to better understand the ASOIAF books (once there's a mention of some Targaryen princeling who died in a mishap and this book tells you how).
