John Huffan ist jung, mittellos und hat nur noch seine Mutter. Als er alt genug ist, hinterfragt er seine Familiengeschichte. Seine Mutter verweigert sich. Seine Fragen bleiben unbeantwortet.
Entschlossen macht er sich auf die Suche nach seiner Familienvergangenheit und stößt nach und nach auf immer mehr Details.
Überrascht stellt er fest, dass er gar nicht mittellos ist, aber wie kommt er jetzt an sein Vermögen heran?
Er muss erneut am eigenen Leib erfahren, dass Neid und Hass stets die üblen Begleiter von Reichtum sind. Die Verschwörer beginnen sich zusammen zu rotten. Es gilt einen Feind zu besiegen und der Trupp hinterlässt bei John und seiner Mutter Angst und Schrecken.
Charles Palliser macht es einem mit immerhin 1005 Seiten Sittengemälde nicht gerade leicht, Johns Leben zu verstehen. Beeindruckend schildert Palliser die Szenerie Londons im frühen 19. Jahrhundert. Zwischen Reichtum und Armut klafft eine sehr große Lücke und man fiebert mit John, diese Lücke endlich zu überwinden.
