Selten so viel an einem Stück gelesen. Donna Tartts Schreibstil macht Lust auf mehr, vor allem wenn sie direkt auf Seite 1 den kompletten Inhalt des Buches "spoilert". Man muss sich darauf einstellen, dass das Setting und die Charaktere ein wenig abgehoben sind und sich die wenigsten mit dieser Klasse identifizieren können, aber das macht gerade den Zauber aus. Man verachtet sie gleichermaßen wie man sie auch irgendwie liebt. The Secret history ist zeitlos und könnte sowohl in den 80er spielen als auch in den 2000ern.

When they said this was a well paced, dark thriller I believed it. I am still searching for Julians charismatic thrall that aparently lead them to killing bunny. He seems more like a cult leader bringing rich kids to pay for him to teach nothing but old greek. None of the characters in the story are likeable. They are a bunch of white kids playing scholars. Richard Papen the Main storyteller is a boy from Cali trying to pretend he is something more than his parents. Hes not. He has no ambition for anything. He wants to coast by as the other students of Julien do and realises on the way, he isnt the only one lying. They all do and thus they feel like they belong. A little desolate family of liars and drinkers. Thats what they do. Translate greek, drink, eat and just meander by, feeling like they are more than they are. Bunny saw through them. Bunny the guy they always underestimated and felt was the dumbest saw through all of their posturing and it was his end. Showing them he saw them for what they were. The book isnt a thriller. Its not mysterious. Its not having anyone at the edge of seats. Its a book about the house of cards coming down around a group of students that play about at being important. Where Julien is supposed to come in I dont know. He barely features. Not he was the mastermind. It was Henry. He drove them to everything and then, when they realised just how removed he was from all he did, they buckled under the pressure. There is a comfort in all of them ending up like the nothings they promised to be during their studies. Henry's end is maybe the most satisfying. Please dont read this if you want riveting thriller. This is more the Dead Poets society mixed with Murderclub
