Widower Charlie Harris, a librarian and archivist a few weeks, he returns to his hometown in Athena, Mississippi; to the spacious house his Aunt Dottie left him. Along with his large Maine Coon cat Diesel. With the help of her faithful housekeeper (who came along with the house!), he decides to continue letting rooms to college students each year. Charlie learns that famous author and a former classmate, Godfrey Priest, is returning to Athena to promote his current book and take care of some personal business. Meanwhile his boarder Justin learns that the man who raised him is not his natural father; and that his real father, is Godfrey Priest who wants the boy to live with him. When the author is murdered in his hotel room, and Justin is found standing over the body he becomes the prime suspects and Charlie along with some help from Diesel, attempts to help clear the boys name. This is a very slow moving cozy that includes a delightfully lovely cat..
