The Editors: Steven King is Professor of Welfare History and Director of the Wellcome Trust Centre for Health, Medicine and Society at Oxford Brookes University. He has published widely on the themes of welfare and medical history, including Poverty and Welfare 1700-1850: A Regional Perspective (2000) and (with Alannah Tomkins eds.) The Poor in England 1700-1850: An Economy of Makeshifts (2003).

John Stewart is Professor of Health History at Glasgow Caledonian University and Director of the Centre for the Social History of Health and Health Care which is run jointly by Glasgow Caledonian University and the University of Strathclyde. Among his research interests are the history of child psychiatry and welfare policy and Scottish devolution. His most recent book was Taking Stock: Scottish Social Welfare after Devolution (2004).
