Nach Fun Home, wo Bechdel über ihre Beziehung zum schwulen Vater erzählt, liefert die Autorin mit dem vorliegenden Graphic Novel gewissermassen eine Fortsetzung: die verkorkste Beziehung zur Mutter.
Textlich und strukturell zwar sehr hochstehend, fehlt diesem Werk jedoch der rote Faden. Es ist keine Geschichte sondern vielmehr ein Aufarbeiten der emotionalen Bindungen zwischen Bechdel und diversen Frauenfiguren.
Da diese Story Telling Komponente sehr kurz kommt, präsentieren sich auch die Illustrationen nicht besonders attraktiv. Viele Frauenfiguren im Mono- oder Dialog, aber keine Dramaturgie.
Dennoch liefert das Buch interessante Einblicke in die Psychoanalyse und in die frühe Forschung von Mutter-Kind-Beziehungen. Dieser Spagat zwischen Autobiographie und Wissenschaft ist Bechdel sehr gut gelungen.
Das Buch liest sich merklich weniger flüssig als der Vorgänger, wartet dafür mit einem gewissen Qualitätsanspruch an den Inhalt auf.
